Model United Nations
During the Fall 2020 semester, I designed and taught a Model United Nations class. The goal of the course was to introduce students to the United Nations and the role it plays in international politics, while simultaneously preparing the students to participate in the Southwest Regional Model United Nations (SRMUN) conference that includes participants from schools across the country. As part of the SRMUN conference, I selected for my students to represent Egypt and Mexico. Through the use of position papers, group work, simulations, and other methods, students learned about the UN, the countries they represented and their relationships to the UN, as well as how engage in debate over different policies, how to write UN resolutions, and how to work as part of a larger team. Overall, my students performed well at the conference, even overcoming the barrier of participating in a large national conference over Zoom to win a conference-wide award. Below is a resolution that was written during the SRMUN conference by my award-winning students on the Peacebuilding Commission.
